Postcards from Hong Kong October 2011
Things have been picking up at work this past month! I started going full-speed with the outreach team, and some of my weekly activities include:
- Teaching an adult English class
- Visiting local parks to chat with our ethnic minority neighbors
- Assisting with a children's Cantonese class (look right for a story!)
On a different note, I had another visitor this month- a former coworker from LA! It was great to see another familiar face!
1. Please pray for more local
volunteers to join us! We are specifically in need of tutors
and retired teachers.
2. Please pray that our team (and our volunteers) will
have humility and cultural sensitivity as we serve people of
different cultures and
backgrounds.
"Want to play tic-tac-toe?" Amir* looked at me expectantly, pencil and paper in hand.
Like most students in the class, Amir came to Hong Kong at a young age and had mastered the language orally. If you closed your eyes while listening to him speak, you'd think that he was Chinese . However, like many ethnic minority youth in Hong Kong, he has trouble reading and writing in Chinese, which puts him well behind his grade level.

Hong Kong, I managed to find a bit of respite!
